Colon cancer (colorectal carcinoma)

Colon cancer is the world’s most common cancer and sadly the most common cause of cancer deaths in developed countries. It is the most typical in Central and Western Europe; as shown by the international statistics its incidence in these countries is more prevalent in men than in women.

Risk factors

Colon cancer affects people aged above 50, commonly men. The main risk factors include age, genetics (some types emerge in a family almost certainly), as well as chronic inflammatory diseases (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease), and some types of polyps growing on the walls of intestines, that may develop into a tumor, so their timely removal is important. A significant and easily modifiable factor is lifestyle – obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, food high in animal fat, red meat and meat products greatly contribute to the onset of colon cancer. If combined with a weak immune system, the risk of the disease doubles.

Signs and symptoms

At first, the signs and symptoms may be less visible; however, attention should be given to a long-term abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea or constipation, bloating, stomach pain or a poor bowel movement. Another warning sign is blood in stools which may lead to anaemia associated with general fatigue and weakness. But not all of these symptoms occur due to cancer.

Preventative measures

Screenings for occult (hidden) bleeding in people aged above 50 are preventative steps which may reveal colon cancer in time at its asymptomatic stage. A simple stool assessment is performed once in 2 years. In people with genetic predispositions, intestinal problems or other risk factors the screening is considered for diagnosis of a potential digestive disease. These people need to boost the immune system preventatively, because its weakness increases the risk of cancer.

Impact of the immune system on colon cancer

A strong immune system is able to distinguish unwanted cells and destroy them. Hence boosting immunity is almost necessary, and in terms of colon cancer it is absolutely necessary, because enhanced immune system increases the chances for recovery. A strong enough immunity thanks to natural food supplements suppresses potential side effects of the treatment and ensures mental well-being that is so important for combating the disease.
